Egyptians had learnt to make confectionery at least 3,000 years ago, according to Egyptian Hieroglyphics (script). But they used honey to make them.
Megasthenes, who visited India during the reign of Chandragupta Maurya has left records that Indians could make sweeteners without having bees-obviously, he was referring to sugar.
During the middle ages, Persians helped spread sugar cultivation. But even in the 17th century, one kilo of sugar cost about 15 chickens in England!

HOW DO WE OBTAIN THE VANILLA FLAVOUR?

Vanilla flavour is obtained from the unripe fruit of a tall fragrant plant called Vanilla Planifolia.
It is a delicate climbing plant of the orchid family, native to Mexico, Central America and South America. The flavouring agent vanilla is most widely used in ice cream, confectionery, bakery goods, drinks and even in perfumes.
