HOW IS THE HEIGHT OF MOUNTAINS MEASURED?

Heights are generally measured by an instrument called dumpy level. It is basically a telescope mounted on a stand having arrangements to rotate it in horizontal and vertical planes, and to measure the focal distance and the angle of rotation. When mounted at the foot of the hill and focussed on the peak, the instrument accurately measures the angle and the distance. A simple trigonometrical calculation gives the height of the hill. Many instruments read the height directly.
