Human sleep requirements vary depending by the age and the person’s need. Children and babies sleep more to support their rapid development. A baby can sleep up to 18 hours per day while an adult has an average sleep of 5 to 8 hours a day. It is observed that we can survive longer without food than without sleep. When we are sleeping we go through series of sleep stages. These are deep, quiet sleep and active sleep. The word “sleep” was derive from a Proto-European word “sleb” meaning “to be weak” which also related to the word “lack”.
